Podcast Guest Application

In this first episode, I’m going to introduce myself, Maureen Ross Gemme, an ex-corporate career girl turned entrepreneur. I’m a personality expert, leadership trainer, author, and coach working with people in recovery to step into leadership at life and work.

I created this podcast because I believe that people who get sober and get into recovery learn some of the most essential skills necessary to be a good leader at work, in the community, and in their family. I’ll also share a sneak peek at what listeners can expect to hear in the future episodes that I will be releasing – specifically in the areas of recovery, and leadership using your personality and spirituality as a guide to others

If you consider yourself a leader and want to improve your skills while in recovery, this podcast is perfectly made for you, so stick around and check out our future episodes.

In this second episode, I’ll be having my husband’s trusted friend, George Herrick, as my first guest. George has been sober since June 10, 1975 (45 years now!) and is currently a life and recovery coach, speaker, artist, and author who just released his incredible new book called The Stone Warrior: Confronting life’s dark challenges with stone art and meditation. (You can find it on Amazon.)

Things you will learn in this episode:

  • How George’s addiction affected his personal life, from losing his job to being completely homeless
  • What made him decide to become sober and move forward
  • Getting back on track by landing his first job in recovery despite the stigma and discrimination in the workplace
  • Why did George decided to leave the corporate world and become a coach for people who had a period of recovery and wanted to figure how to have their life back
  • How his creativity helped him to succeed in the coaching field
  • His journey as a cancer survivor and why he created his new book, Stone Warrior

This is our 3rd episode, and my guest today is Karen Perham-Lippman who is a dynamic executive and mission-driven business strategist with demonstrated results in diversity, equity and inclusion, corporate social responsibility, community outreach and consumer services in public, government, nonprofit and academic organizations. Karen now lives in Colorado with her twin boys and has one son in college.

We met in the rooms over 10 years when she lived in Connecticut and I have seen her grow into an incredible leader. First as a single parent of her children, then as a sponsor and volunteer in both the sober and non-profit community; and then, by expanding on those skills she developed in recovery, she advanced step by step, into senior leadership in her corporate career.

Karen has been clean and sober since August 31, 2005. And I am delighted to welcome her today to share her insight and wisdom.

Things you will learn in this episode:

  • The first time she struggled with addiction and the consequences that came with it
  • How marriage and having children made her decide to face her fears and leave what was holding her back from being her best Self
  • The day she fully committed and embraced sobriety
  • How long took for her to emerge into leadership
  • The key to success in her recovery
  • How power dynamics in bosses with narcissism provided challenges but made her a better leader
  • How she has been able to overcome some of the negative aspects of her personality
  • Karen’s thought and advice for a recovering person who is interested in stepping into leadership

It’s New Year’s Eve 2020! This is also the day that some of us alcoholics (past and present) call amateur night because all the people who don’t know how to drink end up getting trashed and driving. Yikes! So glad I’m not there anymore!

It’s a good time of the year to take inventory of what you’ve accomplished and make plans for the new year ahead.

In this 4th episode, I share my insights on challenges we have encountered during the pandemic; and mostly, how you can emerge as a leader and improve your skills. You already have done so much work on yourself in recovery.

I believe that many of us have thrived because we take full responsibility for our lives and our mental health now. For some of us, it take 3-5 years (or more)  to really clear out the cobwebs. But if a person gets pulled into service work, or if it’s just innate in their personality to help and work with others, then the self-centered will slip away much quicker.

You know that the biggest challenges you’ve overcome in your life have been the biggest blessings, right?

So when you get these concepts, own your shadow, take the obstacles as they show up, and use all the tools you’ve learned in the program, you can easily step up into leadership because you have learned the most essential skills. In this show, I’ll review more than 20 leadership skills you learned in recovery. If you are interested in taking your own inventory of these skills, click this link to download a worksheet I created for you.

Until next week, stay safe, (and sober, of course), and think about all the people you can help with the awesome skills you learned in recovery.

Happy New Year! This is our 1st episode of 2021

In this 5th episode, I’m chatting with an old colleague and friend in recovery, Jeff Rock. You’ll be interested to hear 3 specific questions you should ask yourself before you get into leadership. And when you can align your behaviors with your values, that is the feeling of heaven on earth.

You know you need a transformation when you get clean and sober and Jeff is an example of being able to reinvent yourself at any time in life. It’s all about how do you rewrite the story in your head so that you can view it and see it differently. This will create quantum shifts in not only your understanding of who you are but also in figuring out who you can be.

If you’d like to connect with Jeff Rock you can find him on LinkedIn; you can email him at 4dogsnow@gmail.com or feel free to text him at 413-668-8433.

Jeff also had a podcast called The Next Step with Jeff Rock a few years back and you can listen HERE.

After what happened at the US Capital last week, I am more focused than ever on helping good people step up into leadership roles in every area of life. How we deal with each other in conflict will always bring out our true colors. How do you deal with conflicts?

One of the blessings of working with leaders who are working on themselves is that they always look at their part and try to release their defects of character.

Self-reflection and self-growth is the first step in being a good leader AND also it’s practicing spirituality. I believe that the healing of relationships is the art of being spiritual. And it’s by listening, keeping an open mind, and having some emotional intelligence to go within, and to listen for guidance, before we go making decisions in conflict.

In this 6th episode of the podcast we’ll hear from Jim McLoughlin who shows us the way of integrating his spirituality  into his leadership practice. Jim is celebrating 31 years of sobriety this week! He has served as a leader for many of those years as a Firefighter and then in a senior role in a CT town in an emergency management leadership position. He has some great wisdom to share.

Do you often find yourself in situations where you are overwhelmed or scared, and you hear yourself saying in your mind “I can’t do this?” Maybe you don’t think you are competent enough or you’re afraid to fail and wonder what people will think of you? These are actually beliefs that you’d be better off changing. Your thoughts are the only thing you actually have complete control (truth). You get to decide what you believe and I believe that when you do this, you can create ANYTHING you want in this world!

In this week’s solo podcast episode, I share a story about how I became a manager overnight, with no training, during a horrible lonely time in my life which turned out to be my bottom. Not a good time for a promotion right? But I learned so much because not only was I able to get sober, it was clear that many of my beliefs had to change. Hidden Beliefs will reveal themselves as you continue to see what shows up for you in your life. If you don’t like what you see and experience, there is an underlying belief you have that needs to change if you want a different future. As your beliefs get better, your life gets better!

Today, I’m interviewing Janine Gutstein who is a dear friend from my home group. She has been sober since May 19, 2007 and is a recent graduate of my Recovery@Work program. Janine had been unemployed when she started the program but has since found a great job AND got herself back into nursing school so she can make a bigger impact.

Janine had a very challenging road in the beginning of sobriety because she and her husband were both struggling with addiction and juggling a high life profile with multiple homes and he had a high profile career as a TV Chef personality. But when the disease caught up with him and he lost his job, she knew the marriage was over because she needed to get sober and he was in the way of that. Then everything came crashing down around her with the loss of her children when he took them and left her while she was at the dog park! Then she almost lost her life when she relapsed. However, Janine miraculously awakened with a renewed determination to not only stay sober, but to get her children back.

This is an amazing comeback story of someone who lost everything but with a program of recovery was able to raise a family of three as a single mom and step into a new role as leader because she has a love of serving others. Janine is now working as an LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) and is back in school to get her RN (Registered Nurse) degree so she can make a bigger impact.

I recently had my 36 year sober anniversary. The podcast today is a recording of a Facebook live I broadcasted on that day. I share a little bit about my journey in recovery and what I am doing now in my business. I’m launching a webinar this week on How to Decide if you should stay at your job or if you should leave it. It’s a great program if I do say so myself. However, I’m in the middle of trying to get all the technical issues ironed out with email nurture sequences, a new website with landing pages and all the software tools I need. So one of the things I had to do was purchase Zoom Webinar addon and in the process of trying to make it work, I had to put in a support ticket and guess what, it got hijacked. So in this episode I’m going to share with you what happened, how I dealt with it and a little bit about the Masterclass I’m facilitating and who it for.

Feel free to sign up for the Webinar Should I Stay Or Should I Go?  This Masterclass is running Feb 8, 13 and 16th, 2021. Click the link for more details.

My guest today is Mary Justine Hockenberry (MJ),  a mother and student in life who never stopped growing even 26 years into sobriety. She is a public servant and is an elected official in her town of South Windsor CT as a town councilor.  MJ is also a great example of how much adversity a person can go through in recovery and still stay sober.

She learned to stick with the women who stepped up and carried her through a deep crisis early in her recovery. Then she took her doctor’s advice and went back to college to heal a brain injury. This path led to many volunteer opportunities and then a step up into leadership in government. MJ has great wisdom to share and is a powerful example of all you can do when you stay sober and keep growing.

If you’d like to contact MJ you can reach her by email at: foxglove810@gmail.com.

Have you been in a situation that you just can’t seem to handle, and before you know it, you already see yourself dependent on alcohol or any other substance just to feel at ease?

For this week’s podcast episode, I was able to have a Nurse Practitioner who’s also a friend from my home group, Michelle Steele, as a guest. Michelle found herself divorced and alone with 2 children after another failed relationship. With 2 small children and a pile of responsibilities as a single parent, the stress got worse; and so did her drinking before it finally came to a boiling point and she got the help she needed. Still, the struggles continued. But now, after 3 years of sobriety, she is on track for another degree and in a leadership position in her practice.

Listening to this episode will let you find out how she had an amazing transformation.

If you’d like to contact Michelle you can reach her at: michellesteeles72@gmail.com.

Ginger and I met through networking 6 months ago and we got to catch up a bit in this episode. I am so amazed by how much a person can accomplish when sober! Ginger has done exactly that. Sober since October of 2019, she works as a Recovery Coach facilitator, has written a book, and designed a process to help others with their transformation. There is SO much happening in the country to help people in recovery and people like Ginger are at the forefront.

As a leader, Ginger is not only educating people in recovery on how to be a Recovery Coach, she is also spending time educating the police force, superior court personnel, parole officers and other law enforcement folks so they can more effectively deal with addicts who get into trouble with the law. Yay! We need more people like her!

Ginger is the Founder of Choices Recovery Training and you can find out more about her soon to be released book, “My Choices, My Life” by visiting her at Gingerross.com

My guest today is Dr Bridget Cooper who I met several years ago in the entrepreneur circles here in Connecticut. I’ve been following her, watched her Ted Talk and was delighted when she said yes to being a guest on the podcast. Dr B is NOT a recovering alcoholic but she was raised by addicts and has been in Recovery ever since. She is an inspiration to anyone who has had a difficult childhood. She’s written 6 books and has accomplished so much while raising 2 daughters on her own.

You can find Dr Bridget Cooper online at www.drbridgetcooper.com and she has her own Amazon book store for her amazing books!

In the podcast, she recommends Little Landslides: How We Rise Up From Our Pain, Pain Rebel: How We Take Our Power Back, and StuckU: The 5-Step Course To Unlocking Your Inner Awesome.

Also, don’t forget to check out her TedX Talk called: The Secret to Making Life Hurt Less.

In this solo episode, I am sharing a way to get to know yourself better with a topic near and dear to my heart: Personality. It’s helpful to ALL people, not just sober people, to really understand what motivates you and what stresses you out. There is a direct relationship between how much I understand why I make choices, what motivates me and where my weaknesses lie, to how I’ve made decisions in and for my career.

And if you’ve ever worked a 12 step program then you will find many clues in your 4th step work on what kind of personality you have. And the character defects we discover can also be overcome the more you work on yourself, accept who you are, and allow your Higher Power to help remove those defects.  Being aware of them is the first step. You will change over time, in recovery and in maturity.

Note:  even though I sometimes say I’m an expert, I am STILL finding things to work on in myself. The growth really never stops! So long as you are willing to expand beyond your comfort zone, then there will be personal growth opportunities. And of course, then we can help others along the way so much better and quicker. Not just by being a role model, but by mentoring, sponsoring and leaders others to their greatness.

Note: The music you hear at the beginning and end of each podcast was created by my professional musician bother, Paul G. Ross. His company is called Pan Go and you can find him on YouTube Paul Graham Ross. Thanks Paul!

My guest today is Facilitator, Speaker and Author, Jesse Harless, sober since Dec 2005. As CEO of Entrepreneurs in Recovery®, he facilitates highly experiential online and in-person events that help individuals and organizations harness their strengths and create purposeful visions. Jesse also holds a MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Rivier University, a HeartMath® certified trainer, and XCHANGE faculty member.

His addict dad left when he was 4 and it affected Jesse very deeply. To cope, he turned to online gaming, and pornography was his first addiction as a teenager. Then at college, his drinking began in earnest and it was very clear he was drinking in excess and quickly fell into hardcore drug addiction. Life got very dark for a while as he began ordering narcotics through the US mail and eventually got caught.

Jesse was facing 7-14 years in federal prison and it scared him straight into 12 step programs and therapy. He became fully immersed in recovery and was able to overcome panic disorder and heal other trauma from his life by using daily practices that he talks about in his book  If Not You, Then Who? Harness Your Strengths To Shift From Addiction to Abundance.

Now, Jesse is a professional facilitator to help others become Recovery Coaches and is deeply immersed in spreading the message that recovery is possible.

My guest on the podcast today is Vikki Rood, a sober leader who is helping high-performing women who are overworked, step into their best lives and create space for themselves without feeling guilty.

Vikki is a certified coach specializing in women’s empowerment and she really has great energy in her because she LOVES people! She is also a mom, an author and podcast co-host on the podcast called Telling On Ourselves

Vikki says the key that has kept her going when the going got tough is “relentless forward motion.” She’s just responsible for doing the next right thing and taking steps toward the goal while she leaves the outcome and the results to G.U.S. (Guiding Universal Source).

Listen to this episode if you want to know how she was able to step forward and use her skills to be able to succeed in her field while staying sober at the same time.

My guest today is Dan Reeves, whom I met on Clubhouse a few months ago and, he also has a podcast called The Spiritual Underground in which he featured me and my story just recently.

Dan had a corporate career as an engineer for most of his adult life but alcoholism took him down a dark road. Threatened with 6-20 years of incarceration, he had the gift of desperation and turned his life over to God. His sentence was reduced to 1 year at home and now he’s stepped into leadership running a men’s retreat and helping many in recovery.

Dan shares how important it is to be vulnerable so that your support group really “sees” you and can be there to support you. And when you do that and turn, your will and your life over to a Higher Power of your understanding, miraculous things happen. This is why he never ended up serving that prison sentence that he was promised. And his WHOLE life changed.

Dan points out that our life situations seem to resolve as soon as we change the old beliefs of feeling that there are limits or things that can’t happen. Now he works with people in recovery to help them change their beliefs because he KNOWS that everything just works out when you believe that your HP works in your life for Good.

If you want to tell your story on Spiritual Underground, you can go to Spiritualunderground.org or you can reach Dan at dan@spiritualunderground.org

My guest today is a Breakthrough Coach, and her name is Molly Nichole Murphy. Molly’s been sober since 2014 and she’s been helping women in sales and entrepreneurs that are in high ticket sales to have breakthroughs in their life and business.

Molly shares how she finally faced her own shadow self and learned to dive deep into her own humanity even though she started off in her program as Little Miss Perfect. Over a period of time in sobriety, she was led into a transformational training program where she was able to break through all of her own self-limiting beliefs and saw what she was capable of achieving, and realized she could help other people find their purpose and help them uncover what they were capable of doing.

You can find Molly Nichole Murphy on Instagram here and she’d love for you to join her Facebook ReCreate Recovery Group for women.

My guest today is Kenneth whom I met on LinkedIn after seeing a post that went viral where he was celebrating his 4 years clean and sober. Kenneth got in trouble after getting out of the military because he became addicted to cocaine so he could drink more, and began dealing it. He says that going to prison was the best thing that ever happened to him because he was able to focus on his personal growth and create a vision for his future company.

Kenneth is 4 years sober and currently, the President of Ameriton Freight & Logistics, a professional freight brokerage firm providing logistics services for businesses in the US and Canada where he started in 2020 after being in the industry since 2001. His purpose is to fill lives with optimism and work to engender positive self-worth and believes that every person has a purpose and wants to help them see that for themselves by providing his personal stories of hardship, failure, and the reinvention of himself to guide them away from negativity and toxic environments.

You can connect with Kenneth on LinkedIn hereor you visit his website at Ameritonfreight.com

Sober since she was 24 years old, my guest Marin Nelson, chose the road of recovery 15 years ago. Marin has created an awesome life for herself which has impacted many others. She, along with 3 other sober leaders at SalesForce created an affinity group at work called SoberForce which now has almost 300 members! This is a huge breakthrough to eliminate the stigma of alcoholism and is a fantastic model for others organizations to follow suit.

Marin is a wonderful example of how recovery can add so much to your career and provide so much wisdom when and if you choose to step into Leadership. Her career path has been a steady climb up the ladder in sales and then into a leadership role in Salesforce where the culture and the values are in alignment with who she is. She started as an individual contributor and has since accepted a position as the Regional Vice President. She leans heavily on the work she has done in recovery which translates well in leadership skills. Skills such as empathy, authenticity, listening, core values, and providing service to others which have built deep trust within her team.

You can find Marin Nelson on LinkedIn here. Please contact Marin if you’d like to create a Sober Affinity group at YOUR company. She can help you.

This episode is a solo podcast where I share a couple of stories about having faith and what I believe faith is and why it has served me so well.

My first story is about how I met my husband when he figuratively and literally planted a seed in my heart long before we fell in love. It was a miracle, how it happened, and now faith is the foundation of our relationship. On our wedding invitation, we had the words “Walking with God in the Service of Love and Truth.”

The next story is about how I asked God for help in deciding how to change my life and improve it for the better. First I got a direct message from a very unlikely animal spirit guide and after I followed the advice The Universe tested my faith by throwing many obstacles in my path which changed me spiritually, emotionally, physically, mentally, and financially. Crazy scary year in 2001. Then it happened again in 2013 & 2014. And again in 2020 and 2021, the year of the pandemic.

We will get through this and we will be stronger! But ONLY if we stay connected and have faith. I can show you how.

My guest today is Holly Hartman and she is the founder of the Solo Date Challenge on FB which has over 1000 women around the world. She helps to empower women to date themselves through intentional solo dating, no matter their relationship status. Holly recently started the Solo Date Challenge Podcast and is also an author of a collaborative book that is an international bestseller. She has been sober since 2009.

Holly’s challenge helps women learn to love themselves. She is a survivor of domestic violence and covert abuse and wrote a chapter in a collaborative book called I Am: How To Release The Shame of Narcissistic Abuse and Transform Financial Poverty to Wealth Beyond Numbers,  which is now an international bestsellers list. She is an advocate for women to heal from toxic relationships and families. Holly has been sober since Oct 3, 2009.

While at first in college she was the designated driver, Holly eventually realized that alcohol could take away her social anxiety. So she ended up drinking heavily through college until she got pregnant with her first child and then quit for a couple of years until going through a divorce. Then she began drinking again for 3 more years before she realized she needed to quit drinking for good.

Holly teaches about the free tools that we have access to live a life free of drugs and alcohol. Such as:

·        Know your values

·        Create good boundaries

·        Review your character defects and patterns to have awareness

·        Connection and healing through relationships

·        Practicing humility

·        Have faith and trust in Divine Intervention

·        Keep growing even if it’s uncomfortable

She has documented her fascinating journey as a spiritual channel in her best-selling books and shares this wisdom in her popular talks and Hungry for Answers radio show & podcast.

My guest today is Peter Faulk, a man of many talents,  a director of marketing, a father, a musician and sober for over 8 years now. Peter is also the creator of Soberworld.org and is on a mission to raise the awareness of the disease and its side effects as well as educating young people BEFORE it becomes a go-to fix for what ails them.

Soberworld was created to sustain his recovery outside of the meeting world so he wanted to have something that was part of his every day mindset and thinking. It’s was a way to give back and keep the focus going in a positive direction.

The whole project has morphed into the building of a message and a methodology to help the world and society with this huge problem of underage usage of drugs and alcohol. We loose 3 million people globally to death by alcohol. In the USA we loose close to around 90K each year to alcohol related deaths. Peter was researching the fundamental cause and he came to understand that all of our fixes are on the backend of the disease instead of before it starts.

Peter came to the realization that we basically have a thinking problem before we ever get a drinking problem. Soberworld is helping to educate the younger generation about this very addictive substance we pump into our brains to hyperstimulate our brains which happens to be to their detriment. Not to mention the HUGE financial impact which you’ll hear about in this very interesting episode.

My guest today is my life partner Paul Gemme. Paul got sober in 1985 when he turned 38 yrs old and his whole life changed in every way. In recovery he was able to get in touch with his creativity and after helping people get clean and sober for 15 years as a counselor, he picked up many other skills along the way. He learned to build drums and flutes, then canoes, kayaks and other boats while becoming a leader in the non-profit world. In more recent years he’s turned to photography, motorcycle touring and bread making because the creativity never ends.

You can reach Paul on his FB photo blog called Barns Along the Way.

You can find the book that Paul was a co-author for here: Practice: Wisdom from the Downward Dog, where he tells the story about dealing with the loss of his beloved sister to cancer and what she asked him to do.

Episode 31 Why You Will Rock As A Leader with Maureen Ross Gemme, MS Ed and CEO of Emerge Leadership Academy LLC

Today I’m doing a solo episode about this topic that is why I’m doing what I’m doing and even running a business in the first place. Because I believe that we need better leaders in the world and I also believe that people in recovery have already developed some of the BEST leadership skills in life. I believe this because I’ve been training leadership skills to supervisors, managers and directors in many different types of companies for years now.

Once we give up our addiction and get into recovery we begin to do the hard work of feeling our feelings and dealing with life on a daily basis. No more escaping, but instead, beginning to use the tools of recovery to shape ourselves and our lives into something MUCH different.

After doing the work, we help others. We love seeing people grow and many of us, step into leadership roles in order to do that.

Listen to this episode to see if you have what it takes to lead others.

Susanne is a wellness coach with a large medical group, a yoga instructor, a recovery coach, a triathlete, and mother of 2 kids ages 17 & 20. She works with clients to build healthy habits and coping skills, and is currently back in school for another Master’s, in Clinical Mental Health Counseling.

Susanne stopped drinking to improve her health and become more aligned with her values.  She was a triathlete and a coach and doing a lot in the community but she felt like she had a big secret with the drinking. Her kids were at an impressionable age and they were getting messages about how bad alcohol is for you and yet the parents were still drinking. It seems to be pervasive in the media that it’s okay to drink but it wasn’t sitting right with her but she had no role models of non drinking fun people at the time. It became obvious that it wasn’t fitting in with her healthy lifestyle and after noticing how tired it was making her, she decided she wanted to experience her body alcohol free and 5 ½ years later she is still going.
