Who are you?
I had a transformation in my 20s. I switched from being an addict and an alcoholic into being a personal growth junkie. That’s one way to describe me – among a hundred other ways.
On this journey of self-discovery, I studied MBTI in my 30’s (Myers Briggs Type Indicator) and decided I’m and ENFP. Then in my 40s I got into the Enneagram and it turns out I’m a 7. It’s okay if you don’t know what that means.
But by far the easiest personality style to understand and explain is the Everything DiSC personality map, or what I call your Personality@Work style by Wiley & Sons. I’ve been an Authorized Partner for 4 years and a certified facilitator for 6. Here is what the map looks like.
Understanding your personality is the easiest and quickest way to grow personally which helps you to grow professionally.
When working in an environment where you have to work with a lot of other people, it’s hard to just be “authentic” all the time. There are many reasons why we need to adopt a persona. So often when going for a job interview we get the advice “just be yourself.” And it is good advice if you know clearly what good parts of yourself you want to reveal and what you may want to hide.
For example, it’s not always a good idea to share your opinion, even if you are articulate, when there are many other experts in the room who may know more than you. Especially when you’re just starting out. You have to learn when, and when not, to speak. You have to be open to feedback.
Still, once we get comfortable in our role at work, the people who push your buttons easily rise to the surface. You know who I’m talking about. That one who just popped into your mind. Or maybe you are getting a little too much feedback from people you don’t want feedback from.
Maybe it’s your boss who stresses you out. Or maybe you’re the boss and are tired of the employees who work for you that don’t work the way you think they should. Or the one who has an attitude problem? Or no manners?
In any case, you have the power to improve relationships with all of your subordinates, colleagues and superiors at work, just by knowing your personality type and their type as well.
On today’s Emerge. Evolve. Lead. podcast I’ve recorded a solo episode to explain the Everything DiSC Personality@Work map so you can identify your style and begin to also understand the personality of the person who irks you at work and how you can improve that.
Listen here!
There are too many people who hate their jobs and a lot of it is because of the stress caused by communications. You CAN improve those communications if you understand who you are and the style of who you are communicating with.
Listen to this episode and then take the quiz to figure out what style you are. The quiz questions will help you know what your dominant personality style is AND the animal that best represents your leadership style. Fun!
I would love it if you responded to this email and let me know what you are too. I really am curious. Not to mention I live for this stuff.
All my best,
Maureen
P.S. I currently have 2 open spots in my coaching practice! If you are interested in working with me and want to understand more about what that would look like, get on my calendar so we can talk. Don’t stay stuck in an unhappy situation.
